I have always enjoyed the immediacy and freshness of plein air landscape painting. When painting out of doors I am constantly challenged to find and maintain these qualities in an ever changing environment of light and colour. Fat paint, strong colour, vigorous and loose brushwork are the characteristics I find most likely to produce the results I'm after.
The challenge is even greater when working in the studio. The static nature of a photograph and the unhurried pace make it even more important that I constantly remind myself of what it was that excited me about the image in the first place.
Still life and florals have their challenges as well. More deliberate and unhurried I am still always looking to generate a sense of freshness and intimacy no matter how tightly constructed or painted.
