The Circle painting series evolved from experiments in creating painted “faux” textures on simple forms. Rather quickly the forms and their relationship to the surface they were painted on became the focus of the paintings. The result has been this series of Tromp L'oeil paintings based primarily on circular or spherical forms.
These paintings can be viewed as an investigation of how we perceive a painted image. It is a common notion that we view most representational paintings from the perspective of a window into a three dimensional space. We ignore the physical surface of the painting in order to enjoy the illusion of deep space that the artist has created.
In these paintings my interest has been to generating emotive images that appear to break free of the painted “window”. Moving back into the painted surface but also move out into the living space inhabited by the viewer.
